ART HOUSE CO-OP

I just finished my sketchbook for the ART HOUSE Project. Thousands of books will be exhibited in galleries and museums around the country. I received a theme entitled: BOYS AND GIRLS.
We were all given the same sketchbook. I asked Felip Costaglioli to write me a short poem. I tore out the thin papers and added 2 pages of Rives BFK, a 100% cotton paper which I like for mixed media work. The digital type, is Century Schoolbook. I added ink and graphite to completed the work.

Here's a great chance to study at the Cloquet Forestry Center! It is beautiful setting, you'll have time to walk, and lots of time to work (and you can opt out of sleeping). They feed us well and in general there is lots of enthusiasm for creativity. Think of this workshop as one that will inspire you and give you ideas for years to come. I'm hoping to see students that I've had in the past, and looking forward to meeting others who are interested in working and experimenting with different mediums. No previous experience is necessary, only a passion for creativity.

Participants in this retreat will experimenting with a variety of materials, including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, collage, cut paper, found items, and more. From William Blake, the first acknowledged practitioner of the form, to artists from any number of artistic movements—Futurism, Dada, Post-Modernism, Pop, and on—artists' books have remained popular because of their versatility of content, adaptable formats and structures, and integration of text, image, and form. Here is a new collaboration I just completed. It is now in a private collection. The poem was written by Felip Costaglioli in Sept. 2010. He is currently working on translating Emily Dickinson's poems to the beautiful Catalan language.

In this hands-on workshop we’ll explore the realm of possibilities for creating content and working with materials such as watercolors, acrylic, pastel, collage, and cut papers. Get an introduction to different types of papers, including weights and textures. Explore ways of adding type and image, including handwriting, and transferring methods. Create an experimental mixed media book and one concept book using the methods you learn in class.

Julie Baugnet and Felip Costaglioli will present their collaborative work at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts. Baugnet, a painter has been collaborating with the poet Felip Costaglioli for over 4 years. Together they have created a collection of painted poems using the book format. Last year they presented their work “King of Grass.” In this afternoon reading they will present 6 new painted books and elaborate on their collaborative spirit.

My exhibit at St. Cloud State ended at the end of September. I've gathered up some new and old work for Cynde Randall's innovative galley. If you haven't been there yet, it's worth the drive down. The Kiehle Gallery presents an exhibition by Julie Baugnet, Professor of Design and Felip Costaglioli, Professor of International Cinema and Aesthetics. Baugnet, a painter, and Costaglioli, a poet, explore the process of traversing text and image. In collaboration, they have created an impressive exhibition that weaves landscape and voice. Ranging from large expressive paintings to intimate journals and artists’ books, the work is presented in English, French, and Catalan. This energetic body of work gives insight into the common territories of poetry and image and reveals an innate passion for color, texture, and the written word.

EMERGING DESIGNERS AIGA EVENT

On March 26th, AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Designers) held a great event at the Minnesota center for the Book Arts. Young designers were introduced to letterpress printing and bookbinding techniques. Shown here are some seniors and an alumna from St. Cloud State University. I spent the evening talking with designers about the importance of craft and working with their hands. It was of interest to me to hear comments like: "These days, I just can't measure with a ruler" and " I didn't think people worked with lead type anymore." In all, en enlightening experience for some talented designers.

Bloodcount is a collaboration with Felip Costaglioli, a Catalan poet living and teaching in Minnesota. The painted book was done while I was artist-in-residence at La Muse, in the small village of Labastide Esparbairenque, Languedoc, France.

Pocket Requiem, an excerpt

This painting is a collaboration with the Catalan poet, Felip Costaglioli who lives and teaches in Minnesota. Felip and I worked together in my studio to create and edit this excerpt. It is from a longer prose form. The painting is done on Rives BFK, it is 4 panels of 22x30 inches with 2 winged panels meauring 8x33 inches. Text reads:

But I of all the travelers

the slowest and the saddest

will trace in my notebook of ashes

a long string of pronouns

syllables of gold blood and air

a litany for the poor.

INVESTIGATIONS

In this collaboration with poet Felip Costaglioli I wanted to combine painting and type. I no longer wanted to create text and image on a pristine white surface. I wanted to hand paint the type, giving a more humanistic approach. After the scribes, type forms became more and more mechanical. Even the humanist versions which were made to look like the handwritten style didn't echo the superb abilities of the scribes.

Thoughts on Type, A New Vision

Type forms and the not-so-mechanical solution.

After 15 years of working in Graphic Design I decided to abandon the mechanical printer and go back to handwriting.

Text is by poet Felip Costaglioli. In this collaboration Felip created poems after looking at my images and book formats. We both agreed that his words would be best if handwritten, giving a feel of a journal entry.
